Pilates Classes, Bolton, Manchester

Pay-As-You-Go, £5.00/class

Pilates improves flexibility and posture by stretching and strengthening the core and back muscles. It aids concentration as well as restoring balance and alignment to the body.

Pilates - A Short History

Pilates classes at Life-Balance-Fitness here in Bolton, along with our one-to-one classes across Manchester, Bury, Rochdale, Oldham and Blackburn, are based on the principles developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s. Joseph was a gymnast interested in developing an exercise regime that would work both mind and muscle and in complete harmony. In his classes he developed a following of dancers who saw how the Pilates method could create long strong muscles and a toned physique.

Pilates – Principles of Training

A classical mat-based Pilates session will consist of any number of the thirty-four basic exercises developed in the early part of this century. The classic Pilates exercises have been modified and adapted over time, as our understanding of exercise and physiology has advanced as a form of functional fitness, both strengthening the muscles and realigning the body.

Pilates is widely used for the rehabilitation and prevention of injuries and by athletes/sports enthusiasts as a method of conditioning.

The Six Principles of Pilates

  1. Centering

Ffocusing the mind to the centre of the body or the ‘powerhouse’ i.e the area between the ribs and the pubic bone. Pilates exercises help the rest of the body to function efficiently.

  2. Concentration

Establishing a mind/ body connection by bringing your full attention to executing the exercise.

  3. Control

By controlling the movement we can move with quality, activating the right muscles at the right time. Good technique is essential in Pilates to bring about good results.

  4. Precision

Using quality and precision to execute a Pilates exercise will allow for good progression.

  5. Breathing

Most of the thirty-four Pilates exercises co-ordinate with the breath. Good breathing patterns increase awareness and control of the trunk and ribs.

  6. Flow

The flowing nature of Pilates exercises connect all parts of the body.

How Can I Benefit from Pilates classes?

Our studio in Bolton has classes suitable for both men and women and for all fitness levels/abilities. Our instructors are highly trained to modify exercise to meet individual needs.

The benefits of Pilates include:

  • Increased core strength
  • Improved flexibility
  • Improved co-ordination
  • Improved balance
  • Increased muscle tone/strength

Increased core strength

An increase in core strength will lead to better body alignment, help to iron out any imbalances in the body and can dramatically improve posture and motor skills.
Pilates emphasises training in the deep core muscles and the pelvic floor to create a strong foundation.

Improved flexibility

As we age our flexibility reduces and therefore our ability to lead an active independent lifestyle decreases. Pilates encourages the lengthening of muscles to ensure correct movement. Flexibility about the major joints in the body: hips, shoulders and spine, can lead to a better quality of life.

Improved co-ordination

Learning to co- ordinate movement can also increase development of motor skills and prevent injury. Many slips and falls are caused by poor flexibility, co-ordination and balance.

Improved balance

Falls cost the NHS approximately £15m per year. If we can move with good alignment and posture then balance will be improved.
